One of the most common and stressful problems that is encountered by homeowners or business are plumbing leaks. Leaks could happen in drain lines, sewers, pipes, or in underground water lines – any type of structure can have leaks at any time. It may become difficult for you know what is leaking and where, the gravity of the damage.

Some indicators of plumbing leaks are:

  • A hot spot on the floor
  • Wet carpets, floors, leaking ceilings
  • The sound of water running when fixtures are not being used
  • Hot water coming from a cold tap
  • Water coming from a low point on the wall
  • Low water pressure
  • A water heater that doesn’t turn off

Slab Leaks

Slab leaks occur in water line found under slab foundation. The common cause for this type of leak is incompatible soil that has elements which in coming contact with copper pipes cause negative chemical reaction (also known as electrolysis). It may take years after installation for electrolysis to occur. The best solution for slab leaks is total replacement of all copper water lines.

Another reason for slab leak is the coming in contact of exposed pipes with unprotected lines, electrical conduits, rabar or heating duct work. The regular friction leads to formation of leak as the pipes worn out. Yet the reason for slab leaks could be a kinked line or a line that has been accidentally damaged while working by a concrete worker. The indentation or nick eventually wears through and lead to a leak.

The method of detection of water leak could be jack-hammering and doing a visual checks to electron and using sewer cameras etc.

The electronic method requires disconnection of pipes and pressurizing with nitrogen that gives out a high-pitch sound that could be heard using high powered headphones. The highest decibel sound point is usually the leaking source. The method is quite effective in detecting leaks.
